Future Interior Designers?
Well done to these two boys who produced a fantastic piece of work during money week. Please see our “Interior Design” post to see what the boys had to do. They were the winners of our competition and each received a cash prize from Mr McCoy!
Safer Internet Day
Tuesday the 6th of February is Safer Internet Day. The year 7’s worked alongside Mrs McCullagh’s class and learnt all about being safe online. We are also learning all about the S.M.A.R.T rules and this was a fabulous opportunity for us to share our knowledge with the younger children.
Interior Design
We have really enjoyed money week in year 7. Today we got to design the inside of our dream home. We worked in pairs and were given a fictional budget of £1750. We then had to search through a store catalogue and look for furniture for 2 bedrooms, a living room and a kitchen. We found this tricky to start with as we were all really keen to get the best items which were far to expensive for our budgets! We quickly learnt that sometimes it is important to establish which items are wants and which are needs. Once we have worked out what we needed to buy we then separated our page into 4 rooms and cut out pictures of the items that we have chosen. We are so excited as Mr McCoy has very generously said that the team that design the best house within budget will win £5 each to take home! We can’t wait to Friday to see who the winners are.
Getting Creative!
Brian from Boys Model visited our class today and we came up with new inventions that we could make and sell. This ties in with money week as we learnt all about initial investments, cost of production, breaking even and also making a profit. We discussed what our amazing inventions could do and where we think we could sell them. We then got to make a prototype of our ideas using a range of different resources.
Money Week
This week in school is money week. We are having a pancake and croissant sale which is helping us to understand the value of money and how businesses work. We will be using the profit that we make to get school leavers hoodies for year 7 in June time.
Litter Walk
Year 7 went on a litter walk around the local area. We looked for different types of litter to see what the biggest problem is for our community. We are going to use the information that we found to write a letter to our local council to see if there is anything they can do to reduce the litter in the hotspots that we identified. We had lots of fun exploring the area and are excited to see how the council responds.
Shared Education
We visited Girdwood Community Hub with St Patrick’s Primary School as part of our shared education scheme. We got to do lots of fun warm ups and then play against eachother in a tournament. We had so much fun and can’t wait to do lots of other activities with P7’s from their school.
Badminton
This week we started learning how to play badminton. We practiced our hand-eye co-ordination with our shuttles and racquets. We played lots of exciting games to warm up and we can’t wait to learn more with our coach Ciaran over the next few weeks.
Health and Wellbeing week
We were visited by 'Cancer Focus' and we discussed the impact of smoking.
We also decided to walk a mile around the playground. 7 laps later we did it! 😁

Home Economics at Boys Model
Today we went on a trip to Belfast Boys Model School to cook some food in Home Economics. Firstly we discussed what we think makes a good chef. We then carried out a sniff test to see if we could identify what was inside the metal container. Before we started cooking we made sure our hands were spotless and then we learnt what we were going to be doing - making pancakes! As you can see we had lots of fun and we can’t wait until next time.
